Frequently Asked Questions 🚨

  1. Do you ever do a slice serve?

The quick answer is no, you won’t see me hitting a slice serve when I am playing. The reason for that is, at the pro level, it is more effective to hit a BIG and DEEP serve rather than a slice serve. The pros are also good enough where this serve will not catch them off guard. On the other hand, if you are playing in rec games, this serve could prove wildly effective. Many people in my experience have a tough time handling a serve that is cutting with heavy slice. I think this is a good strategy to use unless you determine that your opponent isn’t having any trouble with it. If that is the case, go back to serving with topspin.

  1. What are the main things to look for on the erne?

Firstly, you want to look at your opponents paddle face. If the paddle face is open, this is the first indication that you may be able to attempt and erne. Second, you want to look at where their paddle is facing. If they look like they are going to hit the ball down the line, it is an ideal time to go. If their paddle face is aiming cross court, I would not recommend jumping. The erne can also put pressure on your opponent even if they aren’t hitting down the line. It may get into their head and win you some more points down the line.

How to deal with cheating in Pickleball ⬇️

Cheating happens in every sport, including pickleball. Coming from a tennis background, there have been many times when balls were called out that were 100% in. But how do we deal with this?

The first thing you should do if you are able is get a ref. I know, the ref may actually not help the situation at all, but just having a ref on court may stop your opponent from making any more bad calls. One thing you should definitely NOT do is cheat back. At the end of the day there is no point to do so. People will be known as players that “cheat”, and that is not the reputation that you want to have for yourself. I know it is tough to keep our emotions in check when you are so obviously getting cheated, but it is far more important to win with your skill rather than stoop to their level.
