Why You Should Stay Low On Returns ⬇️
Body Control on Returns 🥇
The return is the one shot in pickleball that you want to run through. This is because you want to get up to the kitchen line as fast as possible. The serve is also the most linear shot in pickleball. This means that the ball does not come off of the ground as much as other shots do. If you are standing directly up when hitting the return, it is likely that you will be hitting the shot at your knees. The lower you get, the more likely you will make clean contact with the return. Below are three mental cues that you can use when hitting the return.
Get LOW! Before you hit your return, make sure that your knees are bent and your body weight is leaning forward. This will help as you try and get into the net after the return.
EXTEND through the shot. Your arm should be extending out towards your target on this shot. A lot of people will swing across their body too much. This might cause the ball to fall into the net.
Move FORWARD after contact. Don’t hit the ball and watch where it goes. The intention of every return (no matter if it is deep or short) should be to move up into the court. This doesn’t mean that you have to get all the way up to the net, but you should make some movement up even if it’s just a few feet.
Kitchen Ready Position 💪
In this video we notice a couple things that players on the pro level do.
Paddle ready position
Closeness to kitchen
Calm Body
These are common themes that every pro player will do. It is not a coincidence that the better players have smaller swings and less body movement. It is easier to hit counters when you have a LOOSE arm and body as opposed to being tight.
