3 things to think about on the forehand roll drop 🔥
1. Get behind the ball: You should only be hitting this shot in the first place if you’re able to get your body behind the ball. If you’re reaching at all to your right, you should be hitting either a slice drop or a drive. Position yourself so that you can keep your motion consistent, no matter the target.
2. Consistent head speed: Too many people either accelerate or decelerate as they’re going through the ball. I like to think of of it as one constant motion and I’m just covering the ball slightly with a push forward.
3. Finish out in front: I don’t need to think about this that much anymore but the best forehand droppers finish with their paddle out in front, and even out to the right in some instances. There is definite side spin on these shots for that reason, but it’s more for control than anything else. Anna Bright is the best model to follow on the forehand roll drop.
Let’s talk about the backhand drive 🧏♂️
3 things to think about on your forehand roll dink👌
1. Get behind the ball: Yup, the same advice as the roll drop - it’s basically a shorter version of that shot. If you’re stretched it’s also a very hard shot to hit. I usually try to hit as many topspin dinks as possible, and even I succumb to opening the paddle face up and slicing it if my body isn’t fully behind the ball.
2. Get low: It’s extra important to get low on a forehand roll because you’re literally coming from under the ball if the ball is deeper than you expect, your feel will be much better if your core is closer to the contact point. Watch how low Gabe Tardio bends down on this shot.
3. Resist the wrist urge: Especially when you’re going back to your left with this shot (as a righty) it’s extra important to keep your wrist in check. If you would need to break your wrist to hit it that direction, don’t go there or don’t use topspin!
